MOT information

If your vehicle is three years old, or more you are required by law to have an MOT (Ministry of Transport) test. The purpose of an MOT test is to ensure that your vehicle meets all minimum legal safety requirements for use on the public highway.

Your vehicle will have its MOT test carried out at our MOT centre, by our qualified MOT technicians. our MOT technician are trained and tested by VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency) who are the Government’s authorising body and we are able to carry out tests on Class 4 & class 7 tests.  For most ordinary road cars, the MOT test comprises a series of checks that the technician will conduct making a thorough interior and exterior inspection of your vehicle, looking at all the following aspects.

Vehicle Identification Number
The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is legibly displayed on the vehicle.

Registration plate

Your registration plates should be in a legible font that meets Government standards, and they should be securely fitted to your vehicle.

Lights

The condition, operation, security and colour of your vehicle’s lights will be checked and also the aim of your headlights will be checked.

Steering and suspension

All steering and suspension components will be checked for their condition and operation.

Wipers and washer bottle

Your vehicles wipers and washers will be checked to ensure that they operate properly and give you a clear view of the road.

Windscreen

The windscreen will be checked to ensure your view of the road is not impaired and that there are no chips (larger than 10mm) or cracks in the glass in the ‘swept’ area of the windscreen, (that being the area covered by your wiper blades).

Horn

The type of horn will be checked also making sure it is in working order.

Seatbelts

All seatbelts including those in the rear of the vehicle will be checked for condition, operation, security, and type, making sure that all compulsory seatbelts are in position.

Seats

The front seats of your vehicle will be checked for security.

Fuel system

The fuel system is checked during the MOT test It will be checked for any leaks and that the fuel cap closes and seals securely.

Emissions

The exhaust emissions of your vehicle will be checked, ensuring that they are within the Government’s specified guidelines. The exhaust system needs to be in a complete and secure condition, without any serious leaks and that it silences effectively.

Bodywork

Your vehicle will be checked for excessive corrosion or damage, if there are any obtrusive sharp edges then your vehicle may fail.

Doors

The MOT test will check that the doors open and close correctly and that the latches are secure. The front doors should open from both the inside and outside and the rear doors will need to be opened to gain access to check items such as the rear seatbelts.

Mirrors

The mirrors on your vehicle will be checked for condition and security.

Wheels and tyres

The vehicle's wheels and tyres need to be checked for their condition, security, type and tyre size and the depth of tread.

Brakes

The efficiency of the vehicle's braking performance, condition and operation will be checked on the rolling-road brake tester.

The result of each check will be recorded, when your vehicle passes its MOT test you will be issued with a pass certificate. If the vehicle fails to meet the governments minimum legal requirements on any aspect you will be issued with a failure document. If your vehicle does fail its MOT test and you decide to leave it with us for repair there will be no charge for the re-test.. If your vehicle has any issues that our technicians think need looking at but don’t quite warrant a failure document then they will issue you with an advisory document. This document will state any items that are not quite a failure, but are worthy of bringing to your attention, so that you are aware of them.

It is your responsibility to ensure your vehicle is tested annually. Without an up to date MOT test certificate, you will be unable to legally drive your vehicle or renew your road tax. The MOT system is now computerised, meaning that police can check if your vehicle has an up to date MOT test certificate. If the Police find you to be knowingly driving your vehicle without an MOT test certificate you could face a fine and points on your licence. If you are involved in a collision or accident and your vehicle has no MOT test certificate it could invalidate your motor vehicle insurance.

You can book your MOT test with us via telephone, online or you can pop in to see us in the workshop reception. Your test can be booked up to 28 days in advance of its due date, also why not book your vehicle in for its service at the same time?.
